A circuit breaker is an automatic safety switch that protects the wiring in your home from carrying more current than it’s designed for. When it detects an overload or a fault, it “trips”, switching off power to that circuit before the wiring can overheat.
Why That Matters
Without this protection, an overloaded circuit could keep drawing current, heating up the wiring inside your walls to the point where it becomes a genuine fire risk. The breaker is designed to fail safe, cutting power well before that happens.
Older homes often used fuses, which do a similar job but burn out and need replacing once they’ve done their work. A circuit breaker can simply be switched back on once the fault is cleared, which is why almost all modern switchboards use them instead.
When a Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping
Your switchboard usually has a separate breaker for each area or type of circuit, lighting, kitchen power, hot water, and so on, so a fault in one part of the house doesn’t take out power everywhere.
An occasional trip, especially with several appliances running at once, is usually just the breaker doing its job. A breaker that trips repeatedly or immediately after being reset is a sign of a genuine fault that needs a registered electrician to diagnose, not something to keep resetting.
