Fuses were the standard way of protecting electrical circuits for most of the 20th century, and while circuit breakers have largely replaced them in modern New Zealand homes, plenty of older properties, and many appliances, still use them.
A fuse contains a thin strip or wire designed to melt and break the circuit if too much current flows through it. It’s a simple, purely physical safety mechanism, no moving switch, just a deliberately weak link designed to fail before your wiring does.
Fuses in Your Home and Appliances
Older New Zealand homes may still have a fuse box rather than a modern switchboard with circuit breakers. These use either rewireable fuses (a wire you replace) or cartridge fuses (a sealed unit you swap out).
Even in homes with a modern circuit breaker switchboard, individual appliances often contain their own small fuse to protect that specific device.
Why a Blown Fuse Needs Care
Once a fuse blows, it must be replaced with one of the exact correct rating. Fitting a higher-rated fuse “to stop it blowing” removes the very protection the fuse is there to provide, and is a genuine fire risk, this is a job for a registered electrician, not a guess.
