How Much Does an Electrician Cost in NZ?

What does an electrician cost in NZ? Almost nobody in the trade publishes their rates, which is why it is one of the most searched and least answered questions in New Zealand. Here is how electrical work is actually priced, what drives the number on your invoice, and exactly what French Electrical charges.

Indoor lighting installation, a quoted job when working out electrician cost in NZ

Nearly every job falls into one of two categories. Quoted work has a known scope before anyone starts, like a new circuit, downlights through a living room, a switchboard replacement or an EV charger on the garage wall. An electrician can look at it and give you a fixed price, and our installation quotes are free.

Charged work is anything that has to be investigated first, such as a breaker that keeps tripping, a dead circuit or a burning smell. Nobody can fix a fault at a fixed price without finding it, so fault-finding is charged on time and materials. For an installation, ask for a quote. For a fault, ask for the hourly rate and minimum charge.

Standard Electrician Cost In NZ: What A Callout Includes

A charged job is built from a first-hour minimum, labour after that, travel and materials. Our standard rates are the same for residential, commercial and industrial work:

  • First hour minimum: $160 + GST, covering the callout and the first hour on site.
  • After that: $30 + GST per 15 minutes, so $120 + GST an hour, billed in quarter-hours rather than rounded up.
  • Senior tradesman: $135 + GST an hour, for work carried out by one of our senior tradesmen.
  • Vehicle charge: $30 + GST within 10km of our East Tamaki depot, rising by zone with distance.
  • Materials: quoted or charged at cost, depending on the job.

All figures exclude GST, so add 15% for what you actually pay. Rates are current at the time of writing; however, our pricing page always has the live version.

Emergency Electrician Cost In NZ And After-Hours Rates

Naturally, emergency callouts cost more because they interrupt scheduled work and often happen outside business hours.

  • Residential emergency: $300 + GST first hour minimum.
  • Commercial and industrial emergency: $360 + GST first hour minimum.
  • After the first hour: $150 + GST an hour.

Both include the callout and an Electrical Safety Certificate for the work. Not everything that feels urgent is an emergency. For example, a dead socket in a spare room can wait until Tuesday. On the other hand, a burning smell, a hot switchboard or water in electrical fittings cannot.

What drives electrician cost in NZ for common jobs

  • Fault-finding. Almost entirely time. A tripping breaker traced to a failed jug in twenty minutes and a leak to earth in buried cable can share a job description and have very different invoices. You can shorten it by noting which breaker tripped and what was running. Our guide to RCD tripping walks through what you can safely check yourself.
  • New circuits and outlets. Driven by distance from the switchboard and how accessible the cable route is. A socket behind the board is a different job from one at the far end of a concrete-floored extension.
  • Switchboard upgrades. Driven by the number of circuits, the condition of the earthing, whether the enclosure has to move, whether asbestos is present, and whether the supply is changing. As a result, nobody can price one accurately without seeing it. More on switchboard upgrades.
  • Lighting. Usually priced per fitting, with ceiling access the main variable. A plasterboard ceiling with roof space above is straightforward; a raked or concrete ceiling is not. See our LED lighting services.
  • Test and tag. Priced per tag with a minimum of 12 tags at $90 plus travel, so it is worth batching rather than calling us out for three items.
  • Heat pump servicing. A fixed $160 + GST per unit, so you know the cost before we arrive. More on heat pump installation and servicing.

The Travel Charge, Explained

Travel is charged by zone, based on distance from our depot at 179c Harris Road, East Tamaki. Jobs within 10km sit in Zone 1 at a flat $30 + GST, with rates rising slightly for each zone beyond that. If we come back for a second visit on the same job on the same day, travel is charged once, not twice.

In addition, every vehicle in our fleet is GPS-tracked, so if a travel charge on your invoice does not look right, call us and we will pull up the exact route and timing.

Why The Cheapest Quote Is Often The Most Expensive

Electrical work is one of the few purchases you cannot inspect. After all, the cable is in the wall, the terminations are behind the faceplate, and a bad job looks exactly like a good one until it does not.

What separates a cheap price from a fair one is usually what you cannot see on the quote: whether the person is registered, whether the work is certified, whether the right cable was used, and whether there is a business to call in two years. You can check any electrician’s licence on the Electrical Workers Registration Board register. Similarly, uncertified work causes trouble at sale time, when a buyer’s lawyer asks for paperwork that does not exist.

What You Should Get For Your Money

  • A Certificate of Compliance, plus an Electrical Safety Certificate where the work needs one. Keep both, because they prove the work was done properly.
  • Work done by a registered electrician, not a handyman or an unsupervised trainee.
  • Also, an itemised invoice showing labour, travel and materials separately.
  • A workmanship guarantee. As Quality Assured members of Master Electricians, our residential work carries a $20,000 guarantee covering labour and materials.

Four questions to ask before you book

  1. Is this quoted or charged, and what is the minimum callout?
  2. What is the travel charge to my address?
  3. Will I receive a Certificate of Compliance?
  4. Is the work guaranteed, and by whom?

In short, any electrician worth hiring will answer all four without hesitating. If the answers are vague, the electrician cost you end up paying in NZ is usually higher than the quote suggested.
